Dear Members,
Moving forward, I plan on sending out monthly emails that aim to familiarize members with different parts of our contract. I will be starting the series with an overview of the sick bank. I hope that you find these emails helpful and informative.
The Sick Bank
Once a member accrues 5 days of sick time, they become a permanent member of the sick bank. The sick bank is open to members under the following circumstances:
- When a member runs out of sick days due to a major illness
- When a member initiates FMLA due to a major illness
- When a member becomes a parent through birth, adoption, or fostering
If you are using sick bank time for parental leave, you are not required to apply to the sick bank. However, you must file the proper paperwork through HR. If you are applying to the sick bank due to a major illness, an application for benefits must be made, in writing, to the Sick Leave Bank Committee (through HR) accompanied by a doctor’s certificate as to the need for the days and the anticipated extent of extended recovery time for illness.
Our Treasurer, Heather Risley, has made the following flow chart to help folks understand what they are eligible for.
I hope that folks find this information useful. Be on the look-up for future contract overviews.
